Thanksgiving weekend is calling for unprecedented warmth in our city so get out and enjoy that warm sun while you can. This holiday is a chance for everyone to enjoy time with friends and family and typically is a farewell to summer. Here are some things you can do in Calgary over the holiday weekend to soak in all those last moments of the hot sun and crisp fall air. Get out and enjoy!
Fall Foliage- the spectacular hues of the fall season surround us everywhere we look but you could also take it to the next level and explore the parks right in the heart of the city. Pound the pavement of North Glenmore Park and the Weaselhead Natural Reserve to admire the spectacular fall colours. If you want to level up and escape the city for a day, take a scenic drive through places like Kananaskis Country or Bragg Creek to enjoy the vibrant autumn colors.
Pumpkin Patches and Corn Mazes: Head to the Calgary farmyard to check out the pumpkins and corn mazes, from the massive trampoline pillows to the games and farm animals, it’s a ton of fun for the whole family.
Thanksgiving Celebrations: Enjoy a Thanksgiving feast at one of Calgary's restaurants or attend a special event or festival in honor of the holiday or you could even try a thanksgiving brunch.
Calgary Zoo: The Calgary Zoo is open year-round and offers an opportunity to see animals in a fall setting. It may be less crowded than in the summer months so if you didn’t make it out there this summer, this is a wonderful opportunity to check it out.
Farmer's Markets: Visit the Calgary Farmer's Market for fresh produce, artisanal foods, and unique gifts. It's an excellent place to sample local flavors.
Saskatoon Farm: This place is a bit of a hidden gem in the deep southeast part of the city. It’s set in the heart of the Foothills where the Highwood and Sheep Rivers meet. It’s right on the edge of the city and offers spectacular views and tons of tasty treats and entertainment.
Calaway Park: It’s the last weekend to enjoy all that Calaway Fun! The park officially closes for the season after Monday October 9th so gather the whole family and head to Calaway to take it all in one last time before the snow flies. It will even be warm enough for the log ride!!
Head to the CORE: Downtown Calgary has plenty to offer and over the long weekend, it’s likely to be nice and quiet so it’s the perfect time to go out and explore the Core. From Prince’s Island Park to the Central Library, National Music Centre, East Village shops and restaurants, and St. Patrick’s Island, there’s so much to see and do.
There’s so much to see and do in our beautiful city and these summerlike temperatures are a true gift and definitely something to be thankful for. Take a day to go out and explore, try something new but most importantly reflect on what you might be thankful for.
Happy Thanksgiving Calgary!
